The Region of Western Macedonia is advancing plans to modernize Kastoria Airport as part of its broader strategy to boost local tourism.

During a recent meeting between Regional Governor George Amanatidis and Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP) Governor George Saounatsos, officials presented the project study, confirming that the necessary upgrades are expected to be completed within a short timeframe.

According to regional authorities, studies for the airport’s modernization have been on hold since 2008. As a first step, HASP has agreed to finalize these long-delayed studies and hand them over to the region to secure funding for implementation.

Officials also proposed signing a program agreement to allocate specific responsibilities among involved parties, enabling key actions to proceed promptly. These include drafting technical studies, updating legislative regulations to legalize airport facilities, and resolving outstanding issues with relevant authorities.

The possibility of developing Kastoria Airport through a future concession agreement was also discussed. Progress on these planned actions will be regularly monitored to ensure timely advancement of the project.

As part of its efforts to promote Western Macedonia, the region recently unveiled an ambitious plan encompassing tourism promotion initiatives and upgrades to both air and road infrastructure.
