The British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants 2025 are now open for applications, providing a valuable opportunity for postdoctoral scholars and early-career researchers in the humanities and social sciences. Funded through a partnership with the Leverhulme Trust, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), and other supporting organizations, these prestigious grants offer up to £10,000 for a well-defined research project, with a duration of up to 24 months.

Eligibility Criteria

Who Can Apply?

  1. Postdoctoral researchers or scholars of equivalent standing who are ordinarily resident in the UK.
  2. Applicants affiliated with UK institutions or independent scholars are eligible.
  3. Co-applicants from outside the UK are welcome, but the Principal Applicant must be UK-based.
  4. The scheme encourages projects from humanities and social sciences disciplines.

Selection Criteria and Special Funds

Applications are judged based on:

  1. Clarity of the research question
  2. Defined research outcomes
  3. Relevance and impact in the applicant’s field
  4. Justified budget for eligible research expenses

The programme is also supported by Special Funds such as:

  1. British Accounting and Finance Association
  2. EY
  3. Honor Frost Foundation
  4. Journal of Moral Education Trust
  5. Society for the Advancement of Management Studies
  6. Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain
  7. Sino-British Fellowship Trust

Applicants do not need to specify which fund to apply for; all submissions are evaluated equally.

Important Notes

  1. Minimum funding request: £500
  2. Maximum grant limit: £10,000
  3. Projects must be self-contained, with clearly defined objectives and tangible results upon completion
  4. Funds are not for organizing international conferences unless directly linked to project dissemination
  5. Applications solely for attending third-party conferences are not eligible

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted through the British Academy’s Flexi-Grant system. Applicants should:

  1. Register on Flexi-Grant (if not already registered)
  2. Complete the online application form
  3. Submit a detailed budget and justification of expenses
  4. Obtain approval from their employing institution (if applicable)
  5. Submit by 04 June 2025, 17:00 BST
