The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has signed public contracts totaling 899.7 million euros for the restoration of damage at 1,007 points along the road networks of Thessaly and Central Greece, regions severely affected by storms Daniel and Elias in September 2023.

The contracts cover works across six regional units – Magnesia, Karditsa, Trikala, Fthiotis, Larissa, and Evia – and aim to repair extensive damage to roads, bridges, water drainage systems, slopes, and other related infrastructure.

According to he ministry, once completed, the restored regional road network, spanning 26 municipalities, will be fully reopened to traffic. The contractual deadline for completion is 48 months, ending in April 2029.

The signing took place on Wednesday in Larissa, Thessaly, in the presence of Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas and executives from the three construction firms awarded the contracts: AKTOR, AVAX, and TERNA.

Minister Dimas highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader effort to rebuild critical infrastructure across the region. This includes rail network repair contracts signed the previous day.

“In total, we are undertaking 1.35 billion euros worth of projects in Thessaly and Central Greece,” he said, noting that funding comes from both the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (600 million euros) and national resources.

The 899.7-million-euro package is divided into four contract groups, each covering restoration works in municipalities across Thessaly and Central Greece. These projects focus on repairing critical damage caused by the 2023 storms, including road infrastructure and related systems.

More specifically, the contracts cover:

– Restoration works in the municipalities of Zagora-Mouresi, South Pelion, Volos, and Rigas Feraios
– Restoration works in the municipalities of Argithea, Lake Plastiras, Meteora, and Pyli
– Restoration works in the municipalities of Tempi, Tyrnavos, Elassona, Agia, Larissa, Farkadona, Kileler, Palamas, Mouzaki, Trikala, and Karditsa
– Restoration works in the municipalities of Istiaia-Edipsos, Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna, Domokos, Lamia, Almyros, Farsala, and Sofades

During the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos acknowledged delays during the preparatory phase, citing the need to amend the state budget and navigate complex administrative processes.

However, he praised the swift mobilization of funds – excluding civil protection aid – as a major achievement. “Securing and activating 1.35 billion euros is a significant accomplishment for any Greek government,” he said.

Tachiaos also highlighted the experience and reliability of the contractors, calling them essential to delivering resilient and future-proof infrastructure.

The contracts were signed by CEOs Konstantinos Mitzalis (AVAX), Alexandros Exarchou (AKTOR), and Christos Panagiotopoulos (TERNA), who underlined the projects’ dual impact: restoring local communities and boosting the national economy.

The signing ceremony was attended by several MPs and Thessaly Governor Dimitris Kouretas.
