The Thessaloniki Metro is preparing to expand its network, as test runs on the extension to Kalamaria are set to begin on Thursday, September 4, Greece’s Deputy Minister of State Kostis Hatzidakis announced.
The upcoming trials mark a crucial milestone in the project, which is scheduled to become fully operational in the first quarter of 2026.
“From next Thursday, trains will gradually enter the new section of the network,” said Hatzidakis, adding that the government remains committed to completing the extension on schedule.
Ahead of the tests, four new trainsets have already been delivered to serve the expanded network, enabling trains to operate at intervals as short as 90 seconds. In addition, installation of POS machines for ticket purchases is underway and expected to be finalized within the first week of September.

During a visit to the metro facilities, Hatzidakis, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Nikos Tachiaos, toured the state-of-the-art Control Center and the Pylaia Depot alongside Attiko Metro CEO Nikos Kouretas and project contractors. The delegation also inspected the Aretsou station on Line 2’s Kalamaria extension.
Following the visit, Hatzidakis highlighted the significance of the project for Thessaloniki’s urban mobility.
“Thessaloniki’s transport is entering a new era,” he said. “Our goal is not only to complete the Kalamaria extension but also to continue advancing with further improvements.”
The minister also underlined the importance of the metro in connection with the 2025 Thessaloniki International Fair, noting that for the first time, visitors will be able to reach the fairgrounds by metro, which he described as “Europe’s most modern metro.”
