Seismic activity that disrupted daily life on the Greek island of Santorini has now decreased, and the island is preparing to welcome tourists for the upcoming season.
With cruise tourism resuming on March 23 after a temporary precautionary suspension, Santorini is swiftly returning to normality. Authorities, tourism professionals, and local businesses are optimistic about the island’s stability, offering reassurances to visitors about its safety.
Greek authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. While some tremors were felt in early March, experts have assured that there is no immediate threat to residents and visitors, and the island remains stable.
Efthimis Lekkas, president of the Hellenic Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), recently stated that the chances of an earthquake occurring are now similar to those before the onset of activity in February. “The difficult period is over, and we have returned to normality,” he said.
Tourism minister and local authorities reassure the public
Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni expressed confidence in Santorini’s readiness for the season.
“Santorini remains one of the world’s top tourist destinations, with unique natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and exceptional hospitality,” she said during her recent visit to the island. “Despite seismic activity, the island is gradually returning to normal and preparing for a dynamic tourism season.”
Thira Mayor Nikos Zorzos echoed this sentiment, assuring, “Santorini is ready to welcome tourism.”
Meanwhile, Antonis Pagonis, president of the Santorini Hoteliers Association, recently highlighted recovery efforts. While early spring occupancy rates were lower than usual, he noted that May and June are expected to show significant improvements.
“We are optimistic that occupancy rates will recover, and the island will be in full swing as the season progresses,” he said.
Tourism industry gears up for a successful season
Despite some challenges, the local tourism industry is progressing quickly in preparation for the season. Hotels are set to open by April, and business owners are focused on providing an exceptional experience for all visitors. Many industry leaders are confident that Santorini will reclaim its position as one of Europe’s top destinations this summer.
In addition to these efforts, Santorini will launch a dedicated campaign to boost tourism on the island. Supported by Greece’s tourism authority, the initiative is designed to showcase Santorini’s beauty and attractions, encouraging visitors from around the world to experience everything the island offers.
Implementing precautionary measures for visitor safety
In response to seismic activity, authorities have implemented precautionary measures to ensure the safety of residents and tourists. These measures, which will be in place for two months, include structural assessments and other safeguards to mitigate potential risks.
Regarding swimming pools on the island, they have been emptied since early February as a precautionary measure. Lekkas explained that structures like pools near the caldera can increase seismic risks due to their weight. “By removing the weight of these structures, we help reduce seismic damage and protect both the structures and visitors,” Lekkas said.
Cruise tourism resumes on March 23
According to the latest update, Santorini is back on the cruise route after a temporary precautionary suspension and following the approval of a joint ministerial decision allowing cruise ship arrivals, with certain conditions. Cruise ships will dock exclusively at berths off the port of Athinios and at predetermined times to avoid disrupting coastal ferry routes.
Celestyal will be the first to dock on March 23, carrying 1,200 passengers, with two weekly calls scheduled. According to the Thira Port’s planning, at least five cruise ships are expected the following week, bringing a total of 6,000 passengers, with 35 arrivals scheduled for April.
