The Archaeological Museum of Vathi on Samos is set to enter a new era through a modernization project that will upgrade its facilities and enhance the visitor experience, the Culture Ministry announced this week.
The plan involves a comprehensive building program aimed at aligning the museum with contemporary standards while ensuring a welcoming and fully accessible space for all. The project addresses both the spatial and operational needs of the museum and supports its multifaceted role within the Ephorate of Antiquities of Samos and Ikaria.
“The Archaeological Museum of Vathi in Samos houses a uniquely varied collection of exceptional finds from excavations at the Heraion, one of antiquity’s most important sanctuaries, located at the birthplace of the goddess Hera and the site of her wedding to Zeus,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

The Heraion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a place of worldwide prominence in antiquity. According to Mendoni, the upgrade of the Vathi Museum is part of the ministry’s wider strategy to showcase the island’s rich cultural heritage.
The museum is housed in two adjacent buildings – the historic Paschaleio and a newer structure – covering a total gross area of 1,250 square meters. The complex, located next to the Town Hall Square and a small park, also features landscaped outdoor courtyards.

Under the modernization plan, the museum’s net functional space will reach 914 square meters. The New Building will host exhibition halls, visitor services, offices, workshops, storage, and technical installations, while the Paschaleio Building will include exhibition spaces, the main entrance, workshops, administrative areas, and storage facilities.
