Rhodes is taking a major step toward more sustainable tourism with the creation of a new Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO), according to the island’s municipality.
The initiative, led by Rhodes Mayor Alexandros Koliadis and supported by Deputy Mayor Giorgos Toppos, aims to coordinate local stakeholders and guide the island’s tourism growth through data-driven strategies and community involvement.
The move comes as part of the national “SUB1 – Destination Management” project under the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, in cooperation with the Tourism Ministry. It reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance the island’s economic benefits from tourism with environmental and social sustainability.
A key pillar in this effort is the municipality’s development agency, “Colossus 2047”, which will provide administrative and technical support to the DMMO, ensuring professional management and continuity.

Among the planned actions are:
– Developing a Local Integrated Destination Management Plan with clear goals and measurable indicators.
– Establishing a Local Observatory for Tourism Development to track trends and monitor economic, social, and environmental impacts.
– Forming a Local Tourism Council to bring together community members and industry representatives for collaborative decision-making.
Through these efforts, Rhodes aims to strengthen its tourism identity, promote innovation, and improve the visitor experience while preserving the island’s unique character and resources.
“This is a strategic step to ensure that tourism in Rhodes grows responsibly and sustainably, benefiting both our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Koliadis highlighting the importance of the initiative.
