The Region of Peloponnese has announced plans to establish Greece’s largest certified hiking trail network, positioning it as one of the largest in Europe.
As part of its efforts to boost hiking tourism, regional authorities have signed an agreement to modernize and upgrade an extensive 1,729 km trail network across the Peloponnese.
The initiative was first introduced in November as part of the Environment Ministry’s “Creation of a National Network of Paths and Hiking Routes” project, which includes the mapping of trails and hiking paths throughout Greece.
Advancing the Project
To move forward with the “Upgrading and Enrichment of Existing Hiking Routes in the Peloponnese” project, Governor Dimitris Ptochos signed an agreement with Marinis Beretsos, CEO of the Development Organization Parnonas S.A.
“The signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a transformation for hiking tourism in the Peloponnese,” said Ptochos during the signing.

Transforming hiking tourism in the Peloponnese
With a budget of approximately 2.95 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), the project aims to modernize and certify the trail network across all Peloponnese regional units, establishing it as Greece’s largest certified network and one of the largest in Europe.
The project will include a range of improvements, such as cleaning and debris removal, installation of signage, development of digital infrastructure, and promotional activities. The work is expected to be completed within a year.
“We are developing modern and safe trails that not only boost the local economy but also highlight our cultural heritage and offer visitors unforgettable experiences,” Ptochos added.

Part of Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan under the “Green Transition” pillar, the project aims to promote sustainable development, positioning the Peloponnese as a leading destination for cultural and nature-based tourism.
Additionally, it will reinforce the region’s strategy to showcase its natural beauty, preserve biodiversity, and support local communities.
