Over 237,000 Moroccans Obtained Spanish Citizenship in 6 Years


More than 237,000 nationals of Morocco obtained Spanish nationality within six years (2018-2023), based on the statistics from the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, accounting for the largest group of beneficiaries.

However, the figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), indicate that the figures stood at 246,000 for the same six-year period, Schengen.News reports.

The figures provided by the INE reveal that in 2023 alone 54,027 Moroccan citizens obtained nationality, accounting for 22.5 per cent of all naturalisations the total number of people who were granted Spanish citizenship, 53 per cent were men with an average age of 19 years.

According to a report from Atalayar, the Moroccan community is the only foreign group in Spain with more than one million people, with an average of 34 years. Together with immigrants from other territories, this has helped Spain to mark a new record in terms of population, with over 49 million as of January 1, 2025.

The foreign-born population living in Spain totals more than 9.38 million, of which some 2.6 have acquired Spanish nationality in recent years.

The figures from INE reveal that in 2023, in addition to Moroccans, nationals of the following countries accounted for the largest number of nationalities granted by Spanish authorities:

  • Venezuela – 6 per cent
  • Colombia – 8 per cent

According to INE, in 2023, a total of 212,799 people obtained nationality in Spain through residency and 26, 844 by option. Of those who chose the option method, 95.7 per cent of them were under 20 years old.

The problem with the Spanish population, according to local media reports, is becoming more serious, after the birth rate is only 1.16, far below the replacement level of 2.1.

This problem makes immigration and naturalisation in Spain and Europe more important after several European countries are facing the same problem.

The statistics from INE reveal that more than 1.1 million Moroccans in Spain surpass the total populations of some provinces such as La Coruna and Vizcaya.

The figures from Atalayar reveal that until January 1, 2024, the Moroccan population is distributed in autonomous communities as follows: Catalonia (250,730), Andalusia (171,698), Region of Murcia (98,581), Valencian Community (91,375), Community of Madrid (87,609), Castilla-La Mancha (42,477), Balearic Islands (31,095), Basque Country (28,662).

The figures from INE also revealed that in Castilla y León the number of naturalised Moroccans as of January 1, 2024, was 25,719, followed by Aragon (23,480), Canary Islands (19,474) Foral Community of Navarra (17,536), Melilla (11,702), Galicia (9,399), La Rioja (9,332), Extremadura (7,666), Ceuta (4,554), Principality of Asturias (3,249), and Cantabria (2,332).
