The Mel Fellowship Program 2025, organized by the Maryland Forestry Foundation, offers an exciting opportunity for college students in Maryland who are passionate about Natural Resources and Urban Forestry. Each year, four fellowships are awarded, each valued at $10,000, supporting students in their academic and professional development within the environmental conservation field.

About the Fellowship

Named in honor of Mel Noland, a dedicated champion of sustainable forestry and Chesapeake Bay preservation, the program continues his legacy of education and environmental stewardship. Mel Noland’s work led to the creation of school forests throughout Maryland and earned him the honorary title of Admiral of the Chesapeake in 2009.

Fellowship Benefits

Selected fellows will receive a $10,000 stipend, distributed in two parts:

  • $3,000 in 2025

  • $7,000 in 2026

The fellowship also provides:

  • Professional Development: Fellows will act as ambassadors for environmental programs like the Natural Resources Careers Camp.

  • Networking Opportunities: Attend meetings with industry leaders, government officials, and nonprofit organizations.

  • Field Experience: Engage in research and outreach, including blogs, social media campaigns, and webinars.

  • Travel Support: Participate in national forestry conferences and travel across Maryland for various events and activities.

Note: The stipend is not considered taxable income if your tuition and fees exceed the fellowship amount.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Mel Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a Maryland resident

  • Be currently enrolled in a Natural Resources-related field

  • Commit approximately 5 hours per week to fellowship responsibilities, including travel
