JW Marriott has announced the opening of the JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa, marking the brand’s debut in the Greek market and its first Mediterranean beachfront property.

Operated by SWOT Hospitality, the resort is located in Marathi, near Chania, and spans a 100-acre coastal site overlooking the Aegean Sea. The property features 160 rooms, suites, and villas—most with private pools—and was designed by the Athens-based architecture studio Block722.

“The opening of JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa marks a milestone moment for the brand with its entrance into Greece,” said Bruce Rohr, Vice President and Global Brand Leader, JW Marriott.

Blending with the Cretan landscape

The resort’s design emphasizes harmony with the natural surroundings, incorporating planted rooftops, groves of olive and carob trees, and materials such as marble and wood. Sustainability played a central role in development, with geothermal and solar energy systems, energy recovery technologies, and greywater recycling implemented throughout the property.

Guest accommodations feature large windows, earthy color palettes, and interiors influenced by Cretan heritage. Elements like handcrafted ceramics and sculptural lighting draw from local craftsmanship, while shaded terraces and private pools enhance views of the Aegean, fostering a sense of privacy and connection to the natural setting.

The resort introduces Europe’s first JW Market, a café-retail space offering locally sourced food and artisanal products.

Dining options include six venues focused on seasonal and local ingredients. Highlights include ANOEE, a Cretan open-fire restaurant led by chef Manolis Papoutsakis; Õnalos, featuring a sea-to-table concept; and Cuccagna, offering Italian cuisine with a modern twist. Additional outlets include Fayi, Suncti by the Pool, and Eēxis.

A partnership with Line Athens—ranked No. 6 in the 2024 World’s 50 Best Bars—supports the resort’s mixology program, which uses herbs and botanicals from the on-site JW Garden.

Wellness and family-focused amenities

The wellness offering includes the ANOSEAS Spa, five treatment rooms, hydrotherapy facilities, a yoga deck, four pools, and a fitness center.

For families, Phestos Den—developed in partnership with Worldwide Kids—provides educational and recreational activities. Outdoor areas include shaded tents, creative play zones, and a dedicated vegetable garden. The resort also organizes tailored excursions to nearby cultural landmarks and archaeological sites.

Part of Marriott International’s luxury portfolio, JW Marriott currently operates over 125 hotels across 40 countries.
