ITA Airways and United Airlines on Monday launched a new codeshare agreement, strengthening ITA’s presence in the U.S. and offering passengers seamless access to a wider network of destinations across Italy, North America, and beyond.
The partnership supports ITA Airways’ long-haul expansion strategy, which focuses on increasing intercontinental connections from its Rome Fiumicino hub and meeting the growing demand from international travelers. Through the codeshare, ITA aims to enhance its offering in the North American market, its second most important after domestic operations.
“The codeshare agreement with United Airlines represents a significant step forward in ITA Airways’ strategy to expand its network to new intercontinental destinations,” said Joerg Eberhart, CEO and General Manager of ITA Airways. “Through this partnership, we are strengthening our presence in the U.S. market… and we will be happy to carry American passengers on our flights from Rome Fiumicino to Italian and international destinations.”
Under the agreement, passengers of both airlines can purchase a single ticket for connecting flights operated by the other carrier, with ITA flights carrying the UA code and United flights carrying the AZ code. Travelers can also earn and redeem points in the respective loyalty programs—Volare for ITA Airways and MileagePlus for United Airlines—and access airport lounges depending on their tier.
“ITA Airways and United share a commitment to offering our customers more choices, more destinations, and more opportunities to explore – and with this new loyalty and codeshare cooperation, our customers will benefit from even greater connectivity and a more seamless travel experience when traveling on each other’s networks,” Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines, said.
The codeshare expands destination options for ITA Airways passengers to U.S. cities including Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, and Newark, complementing its existing summer 2025 schedule to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington. United Airlines passengers gain greater access to Italian destinations such as Bari, Bologna, Florence, Catania, and Turin, as well as broader European connections.
