Hungary Wants to Allow Expulsion of Dual Citizens Seen as Security Threats


Fidesz, the Hungarian right-wing political party, has announced changes on the country’s constitution, allowing the deportation of dual citizenship holders.

The ruling party plans to change the Fundamental Law so that it is allowed for dual citizens to be expelled from the country, especially in cases where the country’s sovereignty is at stake, Schengen.News reports.

According to a social media post published by Mate Kocsis, the leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, several changes based on the American model will be introduced in the near future, Schengen.News reports.

A Hungarian citizen who also holds the citizenship of another state may be expelled from the territory of Hungary under conditions specified by law if his or her activities endanger the national sovereignty, public order, territorial integrity or security of Hungary.

The Hungarian politician previously hinted that the government is introducing tighter measures in efforts to protect its sovereignty. Kocsis has warned that the new legislation will be “brutal”, advising people to be prepared.

According to the Hungarian local media, the Fidesz faction leader, Kocsis has plans to make another change to the Basic Law, which is banning Pride parades, which is not forbidden in many less developed countries than Hungary.

Hungary Tightens Rules for Foreign Workers

The wave of new measures introduced by the Hungarian government does not start with banning dual citizens. In September 2024, the Hungarian government announced tighter measures on foreign workers, including here a requirement to present evidence that local workers cannot fill certain roles so that foreign workers with experience are able to do it.

In addition, those who were working in Hungary in the past and have been fined for labour violations, will have their applications automatically denied.

Moreover, the guest workers will have only six days after losing their job to leave the country, which is a very short period of time.
