Greek seafarers will stage a 24-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday, October 1, after a unanimous decision by the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO).
All categories of ships across the country will remain docked from 00:01 to 24:00, in coordination with the broader labor mobilization announced by the Greek General Confederation of Labor (GSEE).
The strike is in response to a proposed labor law from the Ministry of Labor that would increase the maximum daily working hours for seafarers to 13.
PNO warns that the measure effectively eliminates the historic “8 hours work, 8 hours rest, 8 hours personal time” framework, raising serious concerns about crew health, safety and personal life.
PNO highlighted the importance of safeguarding working and living conditions onboard and called for more favorable labor conditions.
The strike is expected to disrupt maritime operations nationwide, affecting passenger transport and freight services, underscoring ongoing tensions over labor regulations in the Greek shipping sector.
