Greek Airports See Passenger Traffic Climb 9.2% to 13.8m in Jan–Apr 2025

Greece’s 39 commercial airports welcomed over 13.8 million passengers in the first four months of 2025, as traffic surged by 9.2 percent on the back of continued growth in both domestic and international air travel.

According to data released by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) and Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP), a total of 13,804,391 passengers traveled through Greek airports between January and April 2025, compared to 12,645,721 during the same period last year.

The figures include data from Athens International Airport (AIA), 24 state-managed airports under the HCAA, and 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece.

Aircraft movements – comprising both domestic and international arrivals and departures – also increased. From January to April, a total of 116,707 flights were recorded, up 6.5 percent from the 109,603 flights handled in the same period of 2024.

State-managed airports: Passenger numbers rise 14%

Passenger traffic at the 24 airports managed by the HCAA rose by 14 percent in the January–April period compared to 2024. These airports include those of Heraklion, Kalamata, Alexandroupolis, Limnos, Astypalea, Ioannina, Chios, Kozani, Kastoria, Karpathos, Kythira, Milos, Skyros, Nea Anchialos, Paros, Syros, Araxos, Naxos, Kalymnos, Ikaria, Kastelorizo, Kasos, Leros, and Sitia.

Total traffic reached 1,415,331 passengers, up from 1,241,640 during the corresponding period last year.

Heraklion Airport on Crete stood out, serving 595,306 passengers in April alone – an increase of 22.2 percent over the 487,303 passengers recorded in April 2024.

Kastelorizo Airport posted the largest percentage gain among state-managed airports, with traffic up by 68.1 percent year-on-year, followed by Kastoria Airport, which recorded a 58.9 percent rise.

Athens International Airport: 8.52 million passengers

Athens International Airport (AIA) continued to drive overall growth, handling 8.52 million passengers from January through April 2025 – an increase of 10.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

Domestic traffic rose by 4.1 percent, while international passenger numbers climbed by 13.3 percent.

In April alone, Athens Airport served 2.71 million passengers, up 9.0 percent from April 2024. Domestic traffic rose by 6.6 percent and international by 10.0 percent during the month.

Fraport Greece airports: 3.7% increase

Greece’s 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece also saw steady growth in early 2025.

Passenger traffic reached 3.91 million in the first four months of the year, up 3.7 percent from 3.77 million in the same period last year.

In April alone, Fraport airports welcomed 1.75 million passengers, marking a 4.9 percent year-on-year increase. Growth was driven by gains in both domestic and international arrivals.

Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” remained the busiest of the 14, handling over 626,000 passengers in April – an 8.1 percent increase over April 2024.
