Through a new institutional framework, the Greek Tourism Ministry has redefined the relationship between tourist accommodation providers and their guests.
To meet the demands of today’s hospitality sector, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni signed the “New Tourism Accommodation Providers and Customers Relations Regulation”, replacing the previous framework that had been in effect since 1976. The updated provisions address the needs of modern tourism and align with the current legislative framework for hospitality, incorporating European legislation on package travel.
“The new regulation sets out a clear and fair framework that guarantees transparency, high-quality service, and the protection of consumer and traveler rights,” the minister said.
With a focus on consumer protection and professional transparency, the new regulation outlines the obligations of tourist accommodation providers by updating and modernizing its provisions. It also establishes a framework for contemporary booking systems, electronic payments, and digital applications, while requiring providers to give customers clear and accurate information about the accommodation before booking.
Key provisions of the new framework
The main provisions of the new regulation include:
– Transparent information: Providers are required to offer customers clear and detailed information before booking, including accommodation features, services included in the price, cancellation policies, and accepted payment methods.
– Guaranteed accommodation: Providers must ensure the agreed room is available. If not, they are obligated to offer accommodation of the same or higher category at no extra cost to the customer, covering all related travel expenses.
– Clear cancellation terms: The regulation explicitly outlines the rights of both the provider and the customer in case of reservation cancellations.
– Full use of facilities: Customers are entitled to full use of the rented premises and shared amenities.
– Strict penalties for non-compliance: Providers who violate the provisions face fines ranging from 300 to 5,000 euros, ensuring the proper operation of tourist accommodations and safeguarding customer rights.
– Animal-friendly guidelines: Special provisions are included for companion animals, and businesses are encouraged to obtain the Animal Friendly Tourist Accommodation Label.

“Enhancing the quality of our services and the overall visitor experience is essential to sustaining the success of Greek tourism,” Vassilikos concluded.
