Seafarers operating ferries on the Patra–Igoumenitsa–Italy route launched a 48-hour strike today, June 3, to protest understaffed vessels and demand adequate crew levels in line with operational needs and working conditions.
The strike began at 00.01 on June 3 and will conclude at 24.00 on Wednesday, June 4.
In a statement, the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) said the strike was prompted by the continued inaction of the Ministry of Maritime and Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN) to address crew shortages on ships operating in the Adriatic.
According to the union, the staffing shortfall results in excessive overtime, placing seafarers’ safety at risk during voyages.
“Unfortunately, no action has been taken so far to restore proper staffing on Adriatic ships, which remain severely understaffed,” the PNO noted. “This leads to overwork and burnout among already reduced crews, compromising safety and endangering lives at sea.”
In addition, the PNO is calling for Greek seafarers to be hired in positions that match their qualifications, rather than being assigned to lower-ranking roles. The federation is also requesting solutions to long-standing issues related to overnight accommodations and express routes.
Travelers who have booked ferry tickets for these dates are advised to check with their travel agents or contact local port authorities for updated information.
