The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure is advancing plans to modernize firefighting and rescue services at state-managed airports across Greece, with new vehicles on the way and additional staff to be recruited.
Under the management of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), the airport will receive eighteen new firefighting vehicles — each with a capacity of 4,500 liters and equipped with advanced technology and rescue tools — which will join the fleet by 2027.
The phased procurement has a total budget of 14.7 million euros and is already listed on the National Public Procurement Platform (ESIDIS). The process will be conducted through an international open electronic tender, in line with EU and national regulations.
“Strengthening aviation safety remains a constant priority for the government,” said Greek Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas. “By renewing the firefighting vehicle fleet and hiring personnel in critical roles, the HCAA gains more effective tools to respond to emergencies and meet high operational standards.”
He added that the measures will enhance the operation of regional airports and support the development of local communities.
Alongside the fleet upgrade, the HCAA will soon launch a recruitment process for 75 fixed-term firefighter-drivers. The new staff will reinforce firefighting and rescue units at 18 airports under HCAA management, including the airports of Kastelorizo, Kassos, Leros, Milos, Naxos, Syros, Astypalea, Ikaria, Kastoria, Kythira, Kalymnos, Kozani, Alexandroupoli, Chios, Ioannina, Karpathos, Paros, and Sitia airport.
