The Municipality of Athens will host Greece’s 1st Diversity in Cities Conference, focusing on strategies to foster greater acceptance of diversity within local communities and municipal organizations.
The event is set to take place on Wednesday, February 26, at the Athens Technopolis cultural hub, in collaboration with KEAN (Cell of Alternative Youth Activities), the Labor Institute of the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), and the Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Local Government (ΕΕΤΑΑ).
Upon announcing the event, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas highlighted how the municipality continues to strengthen its role as a leader in equality and inclusion.
“By signing the Charter of Diversity last October, we reaffirmed our commitment to respecting and protecting the rights of all employees of the Municipality of Athens,” he said. The Charter encourages local authorities to embrace and support diverse perspectives and promote inclusive practices.

The 1st Diversity in Cities Conference will serve as a platform for dynamic dialogue, where experts and community leaders will exchange best practices and insights on fostering inclusivity in local governance. Fireside chats and focused discussion groups will explore topics such as age discrimination, neurodiversity, accessibility for individuals with special needs, and the availability of psychological support services.
In addition, the conference will underline the importance of collaboration between local authorities, institutions, and citizen groups in creating more inclusive environments. KEAN, an open social youth association advocating for universal values, peace, progress, and environmental protection, is playing a key role in this collaborative effort.
“The vision of a more inclusive, creative, and humane society is what unites municipalities, institutions, and civil society organizations at this conference,” said KEAN President Stavros Milionis. “In a changing world, protecting human rights is not a choice, but an obligation.”
