Taxis in Athens will suspend operations from Sunday, September 21, to Monday, September 22, as drivers stage an 18-hour strike announced by the Taxi Drivers Union of Attica (SATA).
The work stoppage, running from Sunday at 12 am until Monday at 6 pm, is in protest of an updated ministerial decision that permits vans to provide transport services.
According to SATA, the measure poses a serious threat to the sector’s sustainability, economic viability, and the lawful operation of taxis as a public transport service.
This latest work stoppage comes just days after a 48-hour strike, during which taxi drivers demanded the immediate withdrawal of the decision, the creation of an official registry for vans, stricter oversight of tourist transport services, and fair competition rules for all professionals.
The union has also announced plans to convene a general assembly to decide on next steps, warning that an indefinite strike could follow if the ministerial decision is not withdrawn.
Meanwhile, in response to the previous strike, the Greek government argued that the decision does not introduce new regulations but clarifies and reinforces the existing framework. Moreover, the government said that the decision is designed to support the country’s booming tourism sector.
