Following its successful debut, the Municipality of Athens’ “15-Minute Open Neighborhood” initiative is now being extended to all city districts.
The next workshop will take place on September 2, aiming to design accessible routes so that everyone can reach essential services and facilities—such as schools, healthcare centers, parks, and cultural or recreational venues—within 15 minutes on foot, by bicycle, or via public transport.
“Together with citizens, we are transforming our neighborhoods to make daily life more human-centered, greener, and more sustainable. We are designing neighborhoods that bring us together and where we love to walk and explore,” said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
He also invited citizens, associations, organizations, and community groups to take part, to make their voices heard, and to share their vision for the city.
How to participate

The workshop begins with an interactive session where participants share their views on what defines a “neighborhood”, followed by a short questionnaire. Those who use their mobile phones will see their responses displayed in real time on venue screens.
Participants will then work in groups, using maps of their neighborhood to propose important daily routes and suggest priority interventions for creating calm, safe, and accessible pathways.
All ideas and suggestions will be recorded, and further information is available here. The collected input will be analyzed, categorized, and compiled into actionable material to guide both immediate measures and, following dedicated studies, broader urban planning and mobility interventions.
