Athens is emerging as one of the top draws in Europe for American travelers this summer, ranking fifth in forecasted arrivals from the United States for July and August 2025, according to the latest data from travel intelligence firm ForwardKeys.
The Greek capital is expected to welcome 258,000 visitors from the United States, accounting for 5.2 percent of all US arrivals to EU27 and UK destinations during the summer peak. This places Athens ahead of popular cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Madrid, confirming its growing appeal as a transatlantic destination.
The data, part of ForwardKeys’ 12-month forecast launched through its Destination Gateway platform, reflects evolving US travel preferences across Europe. While traditional leaders – London, Paris, Rome, and Dublin – maintain their top four positions, Athens has firmly secured a place among them, underlining its resilience and upward momentum.
“Understanding the evolving travel preferences of U.S. tourists is crucial for destinations looking to optimize their strategies,” said Olivier Ponti, Director of Intelligence and Marketing at ForwardKeys. “While traditional favourites remain strong, we’re seeing notable shifts, such as rising demand for secondary European cities.”
A total of 4.96 million travelers from the US are forecast to visit Europe this summer, with destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean and Nordic regions showing growing potential. Athens’ strong showing is likely influenced by improved connectivity, a strong cultural brand, and sustained interest in authentic travel experiences.
ForwardKeys’ forecasting tool, powered by its Total Air Market algorithm, offers detailed month-by-month projections that now include low-cost carrier data – a key advantage for destinations competing in a dynamic global market.
