Athens continues to strengthen its position as a leading destination for professionals seeking to blend work and leisure, climbing to 12th place globally in the latest 2025 “Work from Anywhere Barometer” of the International Workplace Group (IWG).
The report, released annually, evaluates 40 global cities across various criteria, such as climate, internet speed, accessibility of co-working spaces, cultural offerings, and the availability of digital nomad visas, to determine the most attractive urban hubs for remote and hybrid work.

In this year’s “Work from Anywhere Barometer” edition, Athens stands out among European capitals for its steady rise, driven by enhanced digital infrastructure, vibrant lifestyle offerings, and Greece’s growing popularity among remote workers.
Greece’s capital year-round Mediterranean climate, affordable cost of living, and access to both urban amenities and natural escapes make it an ideal location for digital nomads and professionals choosing to extend holidays by working remotely.
Athens has proven itself a strong contender, supported by a growing ecosystem of co-working hubs and innovation centers, as well as stable and improving broadband connectivity across urban areas.
The city’s rich offering of cultural landmarks, gastronomy experiences, and historical sites adds to its appeal. Its strategic location—offering easy access to the Greek islands, beaches, and national parks—was also a key factor in this year’s Barometer.
Meanwhile, Greece’s digital nomad visa program continues to attract a steady influx of remote workers from abroad.
The rise of the “workation” trend
The ranking reflects broader trends in workplace flexibility. According to IWG’s data, 60 percent of hybrid workers are more likely to extend their vacations by incorporating remote workdays, with 86 percent saying the availability of flexible workspaces influences their choice of destination.
This shift is reinforced by IWG’s recent Hybrid Working Productivity Report, created in collaboration with global consultancy Arup, which shows that adopting flexible work models could boost productivity by up to 11 percent over the next five years, benefiting both employers and employees.
As the global workforce becomes increasingly mobile, cities that offer the right balance of infrastructure, lifestyle, accessibility, and affordability will remain top-of-mind. Athens’ inclusion in the top tier of IWG’s barometer is a signal of its expanding reputation—not just as a historic tourism destination, but as a thriving hub for modern work-life integration.
Global leaders in remote work and travel
According to the report, Tokyo topped the 2025 ranking thanks to its outstanding broadband speed, transportation network, safety, and the introduction of a competitive digital nomad visa.
Rio de Janeiro secured second place, benefiting from its expanding 5G coverage, active digital nomad community, and iconic natural settings. Budapest followed in third place, praised for its affordability and cultural richness.
Other cities making the top 10 include Seoul, Barcelona, Beijing, Lisbon, Rome, Paris, and Valletta, reflecting a global shift toward urban centers that support flexible, mobile lifestyles.
