Ancient Olympia in the Peloponnese is set to unveil a new education and culture center, designed to boost learning opportunities and community engagement.
According to an announcement, the former Apollon hotel complex has been transferred at no cost from the Greek Deposits and Loans Fund to the Municipality of Ancient Olympia. The site will be redeveloped into a Multifunctional Center for Culture and Education, creating a space for knowledge, creativity, and social activity.
“Our goal is to drive local development by supporting initiatives that enhance citizens’ daily lives,” said Stamatina Papadoggona, the newly appointed Chair of the Fund’s Board of Directors.
Located in the heart of Ancient Olympia, the property spans 3,800 square meters and has been leased to the municipality for 40 years, with an option to extend for an additional decade. Once restored, the center will host educational programs, cultural events and recreational activities, offering a welcoming environment for all members of the community.
The project forms part of a wider regeneration plan approved by the Greek ministries of Interior and Economy. In 2022, the municipality applied for grant funding to improve local quality of life, foster social prosperity, and generate new employment opportunities.
According to the municipality, by transforming a historic property into a dynamic cultural hub, Ancient Olympia aims to strengthen community ties while contributing to the region’s economic and social development.
