The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection o Friday declared Anafi in a state of emergency following Santorini and Amorgos, as seismic activity persists.
According to the Municipality of Anafi, the state of emergency will remain in effect until March 13 to address emergencies and the impact of the earthquakes in the Cyclades.
Speaking to the Greek media, Anafi’s Mayor Iakovos Roussos said the ministry’s decision follows a request from local authorities, as there is concern about the progression of the seismic activity.
Roussos added that a seismograph has been installed on Anafi to monitor the tremors, while experts have inspected the schools, which will remain closed. However, residents continue to stay on the island.
An updated map of the seismic activity between Santorini, Anafi and Amorgos released by the Seismological Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens reported today that over 17,500 earthquakes were recorded in the Cyclades between January 26 and February 12, with some exceeding a magnitude of 5.0.
Civil Protection Secretary General Vassilis Papageorgiou emphasized that the state of emergency will be lifted after March 13.
