The Region of Crete is organizing a special culinary event at the United Nations (UN) Office in Vienna aiming to promote Cretan gastronomy as a key tourism experience.

The “Cretan Gastronomy Week”, organized in collaboration with Embassy of Greece in Austria, will take place from March 24 to 28, highlighting Crete’s culinary heritage to diplomats and UN members.

Over the two-day event, six chefs from the Chef’s Club of Crete will prepare 30 different dishes at the Vienna International Center (VIC), serving at least 2,000 meals per day, totaling 10,000 meals.

“By promoting Cretan cuisine, the region aims to showcase the island’s rich gastronomy heritage and highlight its unique nutritional identity, enhancing Crete’s international recognition as a destination of high culinary value,” regional authorities stated in a press release.

The initiative is part of Crete’s designation as “European Gastronomy Region 2026”, awarded by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts, and Tourism (IGCAT). The institute recognized the island for its rich local cuisine and high-quality products.

To boost the island’s global appeal, regional authorities are implementing strategies to promote alternative tourism through targeted campaigns and participation in international exhibitions, with a strong focus on gastronomy and its deep-rooted culinary traditions.
