Greece’s Airports See Passenger Traffic Soar in Early 2025

Passenger traffic at Greek airports experienced a strong surge in January 2025, with a notable 12.4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

According to data from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) and Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP), more than 2.7 million passengers traveled through Greek airports, a rise from 2.4 million in January 2024.

This increase encompasses Athens International Airport (AIA), 24 state-managed airports, and 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece.

Notably, aircraft movements (both domestic and international flights) also rose by 5.8 percent, totaling 24,200 flights in January 2025, up from 22,874 in January 2024.

State-managed airports: 12.6% growth

The 24 airports managed by HCAA/HASP saw a significant growth of 12.6 percent in passenger traffic for January 2025, reaching 219,777 passengers, compared to 195,251 in 2024. These airports include popular destinations like Heraklion, Kalamata, and Alexandroupoli, reflecting a broader upward trend in regional traffic. HCAA/HASP also manages the airports in the destinations of Limnos, Astypalea, Ioannina, Chios, Kozani, Kastoria, Karpathos, Kythira, Milos, Skyros, Nea Anchialos, Paros, Syros, Araxos, Naxos, Kalymnos, Ikaria, Kastelorizo, Kasos, Leros and Sitia.

Athens Airport: Over 1 million arrivals from abroad

Athens International Airport (AIA) marked a milestone in January 2025 by surpassing 1e million international arrivals. The number of international passengers increased by 12.8 percent to 1,116,359, while domestic arrivals grew by 6.2 percent to 486,140. Overall, AIA’s total passenger traffic reached 1.6 million, a 10.7 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Fraport Greece: Over 663,000 passengers

The 14 regional airports managed by Fraport Greece handled over 663,000 passengers in January 2025, a 3.6 percent rise from the previous year. International traffic saw a stronger increase, growing by 7.7 percent with 263,000 passengers, while domestic traffic grew by 1.1 percent, reaching 400,000 passengers. Thessaloniki Airport led the regional airports in passenger traffic, welcoming 439,000 travelers, an increase of 8.2 percent. Fraport Greece also manages the regional airports of Rhodes, Chania, Corfu, Zakynthos, Mytilini, Aktion, Kavala, Kefalonia, Kos, Mykonos, Samos, Santorini, and Skiathos.
