Saturday’s FA Cup featured ten games throughout the day, but is the FA Cup becoming too predictable?
Early kick-offs saw two big games, Millwall coming out on top away at high-flying Leeds, winning 2-0, with both coming from the impressive winger Femi Azeez. Manchester City survived a colossal scare away at Layton Orient. Orient took the lead through an unfortunate own goal from Ortega after Donley takes a shot from the half way line which smashes the bar and hits Ortaga on the way down. City were saved late on by goals from new signing Khusanov and substitute Kevin De Bruyne to win 2-1 and go into the 5th round.
The afternoon games lived up to the hype. Ipswich ended with an impressive 4-1 away win against Frank Lampard’s Coventry. Key performances came from Clarke and a first goal for Philogene-Bidance. Bournemouth carried on their good form after a poor result against Liverpool to coast to a 2-0 win away at Everton. Goals came from Semenyo and a first for Daniel Jebbison.
Low-scoring affairs at Preston against Wycombe saw a 0-0 scoreline settled on penalties, with the championship side coming out on top 4-2. Southampton’s next poor performance saw them lose 0-1 at home to the impressive Burnley, who kept another clean sheet again.
A very entertaining game at Stoke saw Cardiff take a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes but end up 3-2 down by the 58th. They managed to send the game to penalties after Colwill made it 3-3. Cardiff held their own to win 4-2 on penalties and go into the draw. Fulham avoided a slip-up away at Wigan by winning 2-1. A brace from Muniz put their name in the hat for the fifth round.
Evening games threw up some unlucky results. Birmingham gave Newcastle quite the scare, with Ethan Laird opening the scoring in the first minute. Still, a Joe Willock brace and a first Callum Wilson’soal back for Callastle scrape a 3-2 victory, which was very hard on Birmingham, who held their own and deserved more from the game.
The last game of the day saw Brighton take on Chelsea, which would always throw questions to both managers if they were to lose. The game quickly opened up with an unfortunate error from Verbruggen, leading to an own goal. Chelsea took an early lead, but Rutter hit straight back in the 12th minute with a. lovely composted finish. The pace of the game had slowed down. Neither team wanted to lose, but Brighton just wanted to win more, and in the 57th minute, Mitoma made it 2-1 with a great little chip over Sanchez.
With the draw this afternoon, we have three massive games Blackburn hosting Wolves. The Championship’s bottom club, Plymouth, hosts a mouth-watering clash with Premier League table toppers Liverpool and a massive game at Villa Park between Aston Villa and Tottenham, which could be both teams’ best chance at a trophy this season.
