Chios remains open and safe for visitors following recent wildfires, local authorities confirmed this week, reassuring travelers that the island’s key attractions and infrastructure were untouched.

Between June 23 and 26, wildfires burned through an estimated 65,000 stremma (16,000 acres) of land, prompting precautionary evacuations and a state of emergency declaration by the Greek Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. Firefighters have since brought the situation under control, with crews remaining on alert for any flare-ups.

In a joint statement, the Municipality of Chios and the island’s hoteliers association emphasized that tourism operations continue uninterrupted and that the fires affected only a limited area relative to the island’s overall size.

“No tourist infrastructure was damaged,” the statement read. “The island’s beaches, cultural sites, hiking trails, and natural landscapes remain fully accessible.”

To support its recovery effort, the municipality has launched a new video campaign promoting Chios’ appeal as a unique travel destination.

The three-minute video features highlights such as the medieval village of Mesta, the Mastihohoria, Kampos, the Castle of Chios, the coastal area of Vrontados, the historic village of Anavatos, Volissos, and the natural beauty of Northern Chios, alongside scenes of local festivals, gastronomy, and traditions.

Mayor Stratos Charchalakis noted that the island’s resilience and charm remain intact.

“Chios is here – vibrant, welcoming, and ready to offer the authentic experiences travelers seek,” he said.

Authorities encourage travelers to keep their plans and discover the island’s rich heritage, hospitality, and natural beauty as it moves forward from the recent emergency.
