Greek Ministry Warns Against Non-Essential Travel to Middle East Amid Airspace Closures

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued updated guidance for Greek nationals in the Middle East, advising them to avoid all non-essential travel to the region.

Following the temporary closure of Qatari and Bahraini airspace, Greek citizens in the broader region are urged to stay in contact with their airline, consult official sources for updates, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Qatar and Bahrain closed their airspace in anticipation of Iranian retaliatory strikes targeting the al-Udeid air base near Doha. Shortly after midnight on Tuesday local time, Qatari authorities announced that air travel across the country had resumed normal operations.

However, Greek citizens are advised to remain on alert and may contact the following Greek embassies in the region for assistance:

– Abu Dhabi (UAE) – Tel: +971 5039 01820 | Email: gremb.abd@mfa.gr
– Baghdad (Iraq) – Tel: +964 7832 584067 | Email: gremb.bag@mfa.gr

In addition, the travel advisory issued on December 7, 2024, urging citizens to avoid travel to Syria remains in effect.

The same guidelines apply to Greek citizens in Jordan and Lebanon. For support, they can contact the Embassy of Greece in Amman at Tel: +962 7956 93000 or Email: gremb.amn@mfa.gr.

The advisory issued on October 10, 2023, recommending that citizens avoid travel to Lebanon unless absolutely necessary, also remains in effect.

Since the outbreak of the Israel–Iran conflict, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with Greece’s diplomatic missions in the region, has carried out multiple repatriation operations for Greek nationals in both countries.
