Crete and the Peloponnese are forging a new partnership to enhance tourism, strengthen local businesses, and stimulate economic development across both regions.

This collaboration is sparked by the new flight route of AEGEAN Airlines connecting Kalamata and Heraklion, which creates a vital link to boost travel and cooperation between the two destinations.

To capitalize on this opportunity, tourism professionals from the regional authorities of Peloponnese and Crete recently took part in exchange trips designed to showcase each area’s unique attractions and promote closer collaboration.

“The Kalamata–Heraklion connection is a crucial first step in uniting two vibrant regions through tourism, entrepreneurship, and culture,” said Peloponnese Governor Dimitris Ptochos.

From June 11 to 14, tour operators from the Peloponnese visited Heraklion, followed by a visit from Cretan tourism businesses to Kalamata from June 14 to 18. The program included meetings with local authorities and industry groups, tours of key attractions and infrastructure, and the exchange of best practices.

Throughout these visits, participants emphasized the importance of interregional tourism cooperation, laying the foundation for a multi-level partnership that promises to boost local economies, improve mobility, and foster knowledge sharing.

Deputy Peloponnese Governor Thanos Michelongonas noted that these initiatives aim to expand and strengthen the regions’ tourism presence both within Greece and internationally.
