The Greek Ministry of the Interior has announced a comprehensive upgrade to the Evzones border checkpoint in northern Greece, aiming to reduce waiting times for travelers entering and exiting the country via North Macedonia.
Evzones is one of Greece’s busiest land border crossings. In 2024, it processed over five million passports, while traffic in the first quarter of 2025 has already exceeded one million, underscoring the need for improved capacity and efficiency.
The upgrade plan was finalized during a recent meeting between Deputy Interior Minister for Macedonia and Thrace Konstantinos Gkioulekas and Ioannis Savvas, Secretary of the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia–Thrace.
To address growing demand, the plan includes enhanced staffing levels, modernization of operational facilities, and upgraded IT systems. A full renovation of the border station’s infrastructure is also in the works, with completion expected by 2026.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Savvas noted that the study has already been submitted to the relevant ministries for approval. “Once approved, we’re ready to move ahead with implementation,” he said.
