Athens, Greece.
Athens, Greece, is rising in popularity as one of the top to international destinations for American travelers during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to a recent report by the American Automobile Association (AAA).
Based on the report, this year 45.1 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Memorial Day holiday to honor fallen service members and enjoy time with family and friends. Therefore, from May 22 to 26, Americans will take advantage of the long holiday weekend to travel to domestic or international destinations.
Among international destinations, Athens ranks fifth on the list of preferred cities, signaling strong interest in the historic Greek capital as the peak travel season begins.

Rome leads the pack, followed by Vancouver – favored for its cruise port – with other popular European cities including Paris, London, Dublin, Barcelona, Southampton, Amsterdam, and Edinburgh rounding out the top choices.
Shift toward domestic travel
While international travel remains strong, AAA projects an increase in domestic trips this Memorial Day, with 1.4 million more travelers than last year setting a new record for the holiday weekend.
The top 10 domestic destinations include Orlando, Seattle, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, Anchorage, Chicago, Denver, and Boston.

According to AAA data, 39.4 million travelers plan to hit the road by car over the holiday – up by one million from 2024 – making road trips the most popular travel option, with 87 percent of Memorial Day travelers opting to drive.
Air travel remains robust as well, with 3.61 million passengers expected to fly during the holiday, while an additional 2.08 million will use alternative transportation such as trains, buses, or cruises.
“While some travelers embark on dream vacations and fly hundreds of miles across the country, many families simply pack up the car for a beach getaway or a road trip to visit friends,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel.
