What Are the Obermann International Fellowships?
The Obermann International Fellowships are designed to attract talented international researchers and artists to pursue innovative projects at the University of Iowa. Funded primarily by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, along with support from International Programs and the Center for Social Science Innovation (CSSI), this program supports up to eight fellows annually.
The fellowship is open to active researchers from accredited institutions outside the United States or independent researchers and artists with a demonstrated track record of excellence. It aligns with the University’s mission to promote diverse global engagement and cutting-edge research across disciplines – including humanities, social sciences, and the arts.

Center for Social Science Innovation (CSSI) Co-Sponsorship
One fellowship each semester is co-sponsored by the CSSI, ideal for researchers focused on innovative social science projects. If your work involves survey research, multimethodology, or grant development, you can express interest in CSSI co-sponsorship during your application. Note that collaboration with a CSSI affiliate is optional.

Eligibility Criteria
